Concept

01Kelvin seed vault

Every crop we have,kept cold.

A vault cut into the permafrost, holding copies of the world's seeds so a failed harvest is never the last one.

02Why the cold

Minus eighteen.Then they sleep.

At −18 °C and low humidity, most seeds slow down so far that they keep for decades. Some for a thousand years.

03Inside the ice

1.2 millionsamples.

Each one sealed in foil, boxed by the country that sent it, and shelved in the dark. Only the depositor can take it out.

04Built into the ground

If the power fails, the rock holds.

The vault sits 120 metres inside the mountain. Without any cooling at all, the stone keeps it below freezing for weeks.

05Deposit

Send us whatyou grow.

Gene banks, farmers' groups and research stations can deposit for free. The seeds stay theirs.
